Sport news: Nepal Police Club Champions

Nepal Police Club (NPC) claimed the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull ‘A’ Division League title for the third consecutive time here at the Dasharath Stadium today.

Despite losing the final round match against Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) 1-0, which tied the teams at 44 points each, the Policemen clinched the championship trophy on better goal difference. MMC took consolation for not only inflicting NPC their first defeat of the league but also put an end to 49 game unbeaten run of the departmental side.

It was also for the first time that the champions were decided on goal difference. The departmental side had not lost a single match in league since going down 3-0 against Boys Union Club in 2006. Apart from the modern day league the departmental side — playing under the name of Police Force —had also won two more league titles in early days of the Nepali football. After Mahabir Club claimed the first ever league title in 1954, Police Force clinched the next two titles in 1955 and 1956.
